A healthy population of nitrifying bacteria is needed to convert toxic NH3 and NO2 into relatively non-toxic NO3 (nitrate). However, it often takes a month or longer for the population of these critical bacteria to build up or stabilize. This means that the aquarist will often wait weeks before adding fish to a start-up tank.

UltraClear offers products for both freshwater and marine aquariums. These products consist of 100% natural, completely safe, bacteria. Most of the bacteria in UltraClear are nitrifying bacteria, which oxidize ammonia to nitrite, then to nitrate. UltraClear also contains bacteria to help digest organic sediment (such as fecal matter, excess food, etc.).

UltraClear nitrifiers (bacteria that oxidize toxic ammonia and nitrite to relatively non-toxic nitrate) that work in salt water are different from the ones that work in freshwater. There is a great difference between freshwater and saltwater, and which is why UltraClear offers different products for fresh and saltwater aquariums. You would never put a saltwater fish in a freshwater tank! Nor would you drink 3.5% saline water to quench your thirst. The same applies to nitrifying bacteria. Saltwater nitrifiers really do NOT work in freshwater, and vice versa. That is why UltraClear offers both saltwater and freshwater versions for converting ammonia to nitrite to nitrate.
